The Value of Early Work Experience
So you thought that selling newspapers was a waste of time. Maybe you chose to lifeguard so you could get a great tan. Could be the excitement of teaching sailing and being able to teach your passion to others, what a great job! Or caddying at the local golf club helps keep you in shape and also make great money. Whatever your choices early on, they are valuable for whatever you decide to do years later. It doesnÕt mean you will be a newspaper sales person, swimming coach, teacher or golf professional, but it does show your initiative, ability to focus on what you enjoy and tenacity for making money. All these will become important aspects of what you decide to do "down the road". Can some of these choices be used in the future? You bet! If we begin to think about what interests us early, we will make choices that will reinforce what we want to do in the future.

I have found after numerous interviews with successful people, that they usually began working early and doing a job they enjoyed. They followed their interest, passion, natural ability, or job of enjoyment. That doesn't mean that because you were interested in waitressing and did it during college that you should continue in that field. But there are probably aspects of doing that job that would be translatable to a new career choice. It could be the people interaction, working with food, the variety of tasks, variable hours, good money, ability to make tips, or convenience of the job. Let's translate those interests into career options.

Waitress Reasons            Career Reasons
People Interaction            Strong desire to communicate with different types of people
Working with food            Interest in the culinary arts, creativity and "new product development"
Variety of tasks                  Likes working on different projects or things
Variable hours                  Wants the independence or ability to work at odd times
Good money                     Likes to earn as much money as possible and work hard for it
Ability to make tips         Likes the idea of a bonus program that rewards you for good service or ability to grow a business
Convenience of job         Wants to be close to home or have an easy commute

This translation can be made for almost every summer job or position you held during high school or college. Take some time to think about a job you held several times and list the reasons why you enjoyed it. Understanding how these interests can be re-applied to your career will prove valuable in positions you seek and industries you pursue.
